 The Project

In 2019, C3 went through a project to review the visibility aids provided to mobile plant operators, to ensure they were provided with the highest quality cameras for blind spot monitoring.

C3 approached a number of different camera suppliers to evaluate and test their products. Change Management Lead - Forestry, Steven Davies said “Viewtech came out as the clear winner due to the functionality, high resolution and future expansion options the Fleetview platform provides”.

After testing Fleetview with just one medium log loader at the port of Lyttelton, C3 have since expanded their usage of Fleetview to over 160 different machines, from wheel loaders, terminal tractors, materials handlers and forklifts, to their log vessel grapples, used in the loading of log vessels.

Implementing Fleetview allowed C3 to achieve their primary outcome of providing high definition images of blind spots to machine operators, allowing them to make better, safer, decisions around where to drive and place logs, but also provided further benefits.

Fleetview enables C3’s supervisory staff to have a 24/7 view of the operation, from wherever they are. This allows managers to either correct the operation to match the plan, or to relax as the operations are being carried out as planned. “Previously managers would either have had to make a number of phone calls, go back to site, or worry overnight, whereas with Fleetview, they are able to check, correct, and move on with life” - Steven Davies.

C3 also utilises the ability to record and download footage using Fleetview. They use recordings when dealing with incidents or quality claims Steven describes video as “the most honest witness”, providing you with simple footage of an incident, without emotion. These recordings also provide opportunities for learning and training staff.
